The Importance of Home Oral Care

Now is the perfect time to improve your oral care routine to promote a healthier smile.

With social distancing in full effect, it is now more important than ever to practice good oral hygiene to prevent cavities and other problems from developing. While our North York, ON, dentist, Dr. Ana Santana Guerrero, is still here for you to answer any questions that you may have, it’s important that you follow these daily practices to keep your smile as healthy as possible:

Keep Mouths Clean and Healthy

Brush your teeth at least twice a day and make sure you are flossing daily. After caring for your smile, it’s also a good idea to rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash. If you are sick, keep your toothbrush away from others in your home. Once you feel better, you will need to replace your toothbrush head immediately to prevent re-infection.

Ways to Promote Better Health

Your oral health and general health are very much interconnected, so the more do you to ensure good health and wellbeing, the better it is for your smile. This means eating a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding fast food, junk food, sugar, and starches. Eating healthy gives your teeth, gums and the rest of your body the vital nutrients it needs to stay healthy. Along with a healthy diet, we also recommend receiving quality sleep, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and taking a multivitamin that contains vitamin C.

Recognize an Emergency

While we aren’t currently open for routine checkups and dental care, if you do experience a dental emergency our North York, ON, family dentist can help. Of course, it’s important to recognize when you are dealing with a true emergency so you can get the proper medical care you need. A dental emergency includes:

  • A toothache
  • An abscess
  • Severe, persistent bleeding
  • Cracked or fractured tooth
  • A dislodged or knocked-out tooth
  • Broken braces
  • Broken dental restorations (e.g. crown, bridge, etc.)

If in doubt, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We can go through your symptoms together and determine how to best proceed.

Even though our North York, ON office is currently closed, Astra Dental is still here if you need us. If you are experiencing a dental emergency or if you have questions, please call us at (416) 640-0070 and we will respond as quickly as possible. Take care and stay safe.
